Little Red Chair Isolation Project
/You can find the full video below of me as an “invisible person” transforming this chair at the end of the post!
I found this pretty little button backed chair on eBay and I just couldn’t resist the temptation of working on a small project for myself to possibly sell onwards. So yes, this chair is available to purchase please shoot me an email should you love the chair just as much as me, and my Mother….and Auntie who have both suggested we keep it in the family!
Barney making full use of the chair prior to the reupholstery.
The chair came in its original silk fabric, pretty as it was with its water marked and stained fabric of course I needed to give it a new lease of life.
I had also been thinking about how to stand out of the crowd a little on social media where content is key to being noticed - yes I could so another timelapse video, but aren’t these getting a little boring? iPhone balanced and propped up with books, maybe a stop motion clip could be an idea.
Ive been such a huge fan of social media digital creator All That Is She for so long - go check out her Instagram. Her stop motion clips are creative and hilarious she definitely influenced me to give stop motion a go.
The idea behind stop motion and to making the video clip look smooth is to take as many shots as possible of the process without me in the frame. This derived in a number of challenges.
Firstly I had to keep my phone in the exact same position over a number of days, you can clearly see if you watch the video below when the clip jumps around a lot that me picking up my phone and ever so slightly changing the position.
I had to make sure to keep the chair in a similar position to the last picture taken and not move the chair too dramatically, this resulted to me working on the floor a lot which wasn’t practical. I had to remember to not leave a tool or coffee mug in the frame whilst taking a picture, this happened regularly! I made sure to sweep the floor free of debris continuously.
Lighting was an problem too, the sun would move around the warehouse so morning frames backed onto an end of the day frame made a bit of difference, but squished down into a clip of 53 seconds - you hope one doesn’t notice too much.
And it meant walking to and from my phone continually which added what would take a few days to upholster this chair into almost a week. Was it worth it? Im not sure yet, you tell me?
I recovered the chair in a Linwood printed linen and just had enough fabric left over the make the frilly skirt! The darker red trim and piping was made in a silk velvet and just adds an extra sweet detailing to the piece.
Funnily I decided to upload my “invisible upholstery” video to Tik Tok, its an alien platform to me and maybe not quite yet a demographic I would promote to seriously BUT I think it went a little viral. Currently its at 20,000 views! I thought that was quite impressive…. and some of the comments made me giggle.
QUICK UPDATE SEPT 2020: Current Tik Tok views are so close to 1,000,000!!!!
The chair is available to purchase from me, if you would to enquire please send an email to hello@thetextilewallcompany.co.uk I would love it to find a home.
